brand new butterfly
After a few weeks, we were hanging out near the table where the cage sat and I saw a monarch laying helplessly on the bottom of the cage, the chrysalis hung brown and broken from the branch. "did you notice that?" i asked and pointed to the floundering butterfly. "No!" he said and jumped up to help the little guy onto a leaf of his orchid sitting in the window.
He hung for several hours, drying the hemolymph from on his wings. Then Keith opened the window and he flew away.
Royal Purple: Old Endings, New Beginnings of Spring
Red leaves, dried cranberries, flax, and balsamic vinaigrette. Dark, deep, flavors all around. I found this poem a few weeks ago, before spring really hit, and it got me through the last few bitter days of winter. A celebration of eating from the garden.
"The First Salad of March"
It is succulent, dainty,
intense. It is crisp
as new money.
It lights up my blood
and urges fur from
the backs of my hands.
I want to roll in leaves
that are still lumps
on twigs. First salad
strong and fierce and plaintive:
love at age five. Spring
makes new the taste of lettuce
fresh as a tear.
